Aug. 24, 2004 Guide to Vancouver Island, British Columbia
Vancouver Island stretches for more than 450 superb kilometers off the west coast of mainland British Columbia. A magnificent chain of rugged snow-capped mountains divides the island into two distinct sides: dense, rain-drenched forest and remote surf- and wind-battered shores on the west, and well-populated, beach-fringed lowlands on the east.
VictoriaThe elegant capital of British Columbia, Victoria boasts a mild climate and friendly people who keep alive the original traditions and atmosphere of Merry Olde England. Nanaimo On the east coast of Vancouver Island, Nanaimo is the island's second-largest city. It has a rich history, mild climate and a direct ferry link to both of Vancouver's ferry terminals. Pacific Rim National Park This park encompasses a long, narrow strip of coast that has been battered by the sea for eons. It comprises three "units": Long Beach, the Broken Group Islands and the West Coast Trail. Tofino The bustling fishing village of Tofino sits at the very end of a long narrow peninsula, on the southern edge of sheltered Clayoquot Sound. Ucluelet A small town of 1,800 on the northern edge of Barkley Sound, Ucluelet (pronounced yoo-CLOO-let) was first established centuries ago by the Nuu-chal-nulth people as a fishing village. Southern Gulf Islands The islands' mild, almost Mediterranean climate, beautiful pastoral scenery, driftwood-strewn beaches and prolific marine life are a haven from hectic urban life. |
