Rugged beauty, creature comforts in Newport

The same day I returned from my trip to the Oregon coast, a friend remarked, "Wow! What an area! Much better than the Washington coast, don't you think?"

My friend got the "wow" part right. Whether it's fair to compare the two coasts is the old apples-and-oranges game.

So much has been written about -- and so many photographs taken of -- the Oregon coast, that I decided to explore more of it and see what all of the fuss is about.
