The "Tillamook Burn" story just burns to be told.
It's an extraordinary tale of a series of devastating forest fires in Oregon, the last of which occurred more than 50 years ago. The story is so dramatic that in 1991 the Oregon Legislature mandated that the story be told.

Hikers often overlook Oregon's coast when seeking trails to explore. After all, Oregon's coastline is rugged, but not wilderness a major highway, U.S. 101, rolls along the edge of the Pacific for the length of the state.
Despite that highway, there's plenty of wild land to explore along Oregon's western edge. Some of the best trails follow long fingers of land that jut out into the Pacific, leaving the road far inland. Others ramble through deep forest canyons and over steep, rocky headlands terrain too rough for roads, but perfect for trails.

TILLAMOOK, Ore. -- Followed closely by their dad, a couple of young boys scrambled up the metal stairs adjacent to the vintage World War II B-25 Mitchell bomber. From their vantage point, the three were able to peer into the immaculately restored cockpit of one of the most legendary bombers in America's World War II arsenal. The sound of the airplane's two 1,700-horsepower engines roared from a video display nearby.
